Ivan Smith’s shift away from fast fashion towards more enduring arts was driven by his reaction against unsustainable practices. After a successful career as a fashion and textile designer, the South African painter now works across disciplines, with an emphasis on mixed media painting and drawing.

Since January 2020, Smith has increasingly incorporated digital techniques into his workflow, resulting in more conceptual work. His contemporary and figurative works feature elaborate motifs and play with pattern and design. They often embed mannequin-like subjects in an aesthetic fabric of the world.
